Nasjonale turistveger
For the first post in our blog about travelling around Norway, we’ve decided to write about Nasjonale turistveger, or the Norwegian Scenic Routes. When we first bought our plane tickets to Bergen, back in 2017, we had no clue how to plan our trip. Those of you who spent any time in Norway know how beautiful and large the country is. Therefore trying to find places to go using just Google Maps, while useful, can prove to be rather unsuccessful. While travelling around Norway it may seem that it does not matter where you go - spectacular views await you around almost every corner.
It was around that time, however, when we found out about Nasjonale turistveger.
So what exactly are Nasjonale turistveger? They are 18 tourist routes, established and maintained by Statens vegvesen, or the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Each of the routes is from 27 to 433 kilometres long, which is why they are most adjusted for car trips. Many of the stops along the route are accessible by public transportation, however. If you have the strength to do so, and you are not afraid of the ever-changing Norwegian weather, you can try them on a bike as well.
Each route has many interesting spots which are worth to stop by. Each is also easily accessible by car, and Statens vegvesen pays special attention to making sure that there are enough parking spots, toilets or EV charging stations along the way. Each spot offers not only beautiful views, but also interesting architecture, often designed by well-known architects. Moreover, at the beginning of each route and near each attraction, you will find the characteristic signs with Nasjonale turistveger’s logo on them. That way, even if a particular spot may be a bit off the beaten path, there is no possibility of missing the place where you should stop.
Thanks to Nasjonale turistveger we were able to plan our whole trip around them. Three years have passed since then, and we completed 15 out of 18 routes already! In the following posts on our blog you will be able to read about the most interesting spots we saw during our journeys. Many of these places you may have already seen on the pictures found on the Internet, however, there are just as many that are really not that well known, and you won’t find many tourists there too!
If you are planning a trip to Norway, do check out the website of Nasjonale turistveger. We are absolutely sure that it will help you as a tool to plan your trip, just as it has proven to be useful for us many times before!
