Steinsdalsfossen

A week ago we wrote about the Nasjonale turistveger (if you haven’t had the chance to read it, please go here), while today we are going to tell you about a very attractive spot alongside the Hardanger route.

The fact that we chose Steindalsfossen waterfall as the first spot is not a coincidence. It lies at the beginning of the Hardanger route - if one begins their trip in Bergen - about 75 kilometres from the city itself. For us it was one of the first stops of our initial trip to Norway.

What makes this magnificent waterfall special is the way how the whole stop is designed. You can not only walk very close to the waterfall, but you can even go behind it and see the falling masses of water from the back! The view of the whole valley behind the wall of water is a truly breathtaking view. Throughout the whole visit you will hear the booming sounds of water hitting the ground below, which reminds you how powerful the waterfall is. The place is very easily accessible thanks to a parking lot nearby. A tourist information bureau is located there as well.

Before we end the blogpost, let us say a few words about the name Steinsdalsfossen. Technically, to say “Steinsdalsfossen waterfall” could be considered a linguistic error, since the Norwegian word fossen means waterfall. When travelling around Norway you will quickly learn that its language likes to form such compounds very much, especially in case of names. As such, vast majority of waterfalls in Norway contains the word fossen as part of their names.
